Our safety assessments are based on EPA compliance data, contaminant levels, and violation history for each city's water system. We compare detected contaminant levels against federal Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) and health guidelines to generate a water quality score from 0 to 100.
A score of 85 or above generally indicates safe, high-quality tap water. Scores between 65 and 84 suggest the water meets federal standards but may have elevated levels of certain contaminants. Scores below 65 warrant closer attention and possibly a home filtration system.
